The Fund
The Eugenia M. Cobbinah Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of the late Eugenia M. Cobbinah. Eugenia was an honors student in her senior year at Lindblom High School when she was tragically killed. She had a promising future and wanted to become a nurse. Her teacher, Mr. Richard Lufrano, established this scholarship in her memory.
Legacy
Eugenia Cobbinah was going to be a nurse. She talked about it all the time. She had this notion that if she worked hard and stayed positive, she'd make out OK. It didn't work out that way. In the spring of 1996, just a few days before her high school graduation and two months before she was to enroll at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Nursing, Cobbinah was killed, the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting. Her friends remember Eugenia as both extraordinary and down-to-earth. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Peer Leaders, a group of upperclassmen who tutor underclassmen. She worked as a cashier at the Jewel and helped her mother take care of her ailing father.
Rich Lufrano, a former Lindblom English teacher had her for honors literature and remembers her as so ambitious and diligent. A few weeks after Eugenia's funeral, Rich decided to set up a scholarship in her name.
The Impact
Rich originally raised over $25,000 which provides an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a deserving student. Last year, $10,650 was successfully raised for the Eugenia M. Cobbinah Memorial Scholarship Fund. Rich wants to continue to honor Eugenia's memory and grow the scholarship, to provide more opportunities for students like Eugenia, especially those interested in Nursing careers.
