Alternative Spring Break (ASB) at UIC is a student-led department initiative under Student Leadership and Civic Engagement that aims to help student volunteers learn about specific social issues in a hands-on/immersion experience. We achieve this by immersing them in diverse cultures and environments within the Chicagoland area and across the country, fostering service-oriented learning experiences. ASB aims to engage, educate, and elevate students' social awareness and inspire lifelong commitment to social action.
For 2025, ASB will be going to Tahlequah, OK. This will be an immersive experience that will teach the participants more about the Cherokee nation and Black Wall Street in Tulsa, OK. There will be both educational components (around hunger and homelessness and human rights) and service components (possible projects such as minor construction work, sorting donations, soup kitchen, environment clean up, etc.). Student participants will be raising funds to help cover some of the costs of the trip (transportation, housing, supplies for service sites, etc.). Please support ASB and make a gift today!
